Thematic analysis is difficult for young readers. Language arts teachers often make it a priority to guide students to an understanding of the big ideas within narratives and they employ numerous strategies to do so. Plot diagrams figure prominently in literary analysis, but they have limitations.
The Elevated Story Mountain is a graphic organizer that forces students to dig deeper to uncover the themes and big ideas within narratives. I’ve created a screencast of the method.
